Joint Base Andrews Naval Air Facility Washington or Andrews Air Force Base, as it is more commonly known, was established on September 5, 1942 during World War II. Originally named Camp Springs Air Base, Andrews Air Force Base was renamed in honor of the former Commanding General of United States Forces in the European Theater of Operations during WWII, Lieutenant General Frank M. Andrews. First named Andrews Field in 1945 in honor of Lieutenant Andrews after his death in a plane crash in Iceland, the base took the name Andrews Air Force Base in 1948, shortly after the end of World War II. Most recently, Andrews Air Force Base was renamed Joint Base Andrews Naval Air Facility Washington on October 1, 2009.
