Arlington National Cemetery

Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia was designated an official military cemetery in 1864. More than 300,000 people are buried at Arlington, including veterans from every U.S.-involved war from the American Revolution the war in Iraq. Over 3,800 former slaves, known during the Civil War as “contrabands,” are also buried here. Presidents William Howard Taft and John F. Kennedy are buried at Arlington National Cemetery. An average of 28 funerals are held each day at Arlington National Cemetery; it is the second-largest national cemetery in the United States.
Tomb of the Unknowns. Three unknown soldiers are buried in the Tomb of the Unknowns, previously the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier: one soldier each from World War I, World War II, and the Korean Conflict. The remains of a fourth soldier killed in the Vietnam Conflict and buried in the Tomb of the Unknowns were later identified. The Tomb is guarded 24-hours a day, 365 days a year by the U.S. Army.
Visiting Arlington National Cemetery. A vacation steeped in the history of Virginia and the United States isn’t complete without a visit to Arlington National Cemetery. Memorial Amphitheater at Arlington National Cemetery. Three major memorial services are held at Arlington Memorial Amphitheater, attracting upwards of 5,000 people. The services are held on Easter, Memorial Day and Veterans Day. The Easter service is a sunrise service that begins at 6:00am. Memorial Day and Veterans Day services begin at 11am. The beautiful, white amphitheater is constructed mainly of marble quarried in Vermont. The Memorial Amphitheater was dedicated in 1920.  [Top]
