Originally part of land that was on the Belvoir estate and plantation, Fort Belvoir enjoys a long and rich history that dates back 1738 when William Fairfax built an elegant mansion for his family. The Fairfax family moved into the house in 1740 and the family occupied the grand manor house until 1783. Today, Fairfax family graves and the remaining ruins of the Belvoir Mansion are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) is changing the face of Fort Belvoir. BRAC 133 at the Mark Center complex consists of 2 office towers of 15 and 17 stories as well as a parking garage. BRAC 133 at the Mark Center Complex will be the new home to the Washington Headquarters Service (WHS), Defense Human Resources Activity (DHRA), Pentagon Force Protection Agency (PFPA), Defense Technology Security Administration (DTSA), DoD Inspector General (DoDIG), DoD Education Activity (DoDEA).
BRAC 168 at Fort Belvoir consists of 8,500 personnel moving to a new 2.4 million square foot campus of the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA) on the Engineering Proving Grounds (EPG). BRAC 169 at Fort Belvoir s the construction of the new Fort Belvoir Community Hospital (replacement for DeWitt Community Hospital) located on the main post of Fort Belvoir. 3,200 personnel will work in the new 120 bed hospital with clinics and helipad.
